What Happens When A Mother Dies?
KShs 800.00
What Happens When Mothers Die is a memoir about my mother—who she was to the world, who she was to her children, and who she was quietly, when no one was watching.
For most of my life, I knew her first as a mother: strict, protective, endlessly concerned, often misunderstood. Like many children, I believed her caution stood in the way of my freedom. I did not see then that her rules were rooted in love, that her vigilance was shaped by concern—not for herself, but for us, and for the lives she was trying to safeguard.
Only later did I begin to see the woman behind the role. A woman who carried responsibility with determination, who worked, provided, endured, and rarely complained. A woman who shielded her children not only from the world, but from her own struggles. Even when she was unwell, she chose silence over burdening us, strength over exposure.
This book is my attempt to remember her fully—not as an ideal, but as a human being. A mother who was strong and tired, loving and concerned, present and yet often unseen. It is also a reckoning with regret: the conversations we did not have, the tenderness we postponed, the understanding that came too late.
When my mother died, I did not just lose her—I lost the person who had known me the longest, the one who held the beginning of my story. Life continued, but it did so with an absence that reshaped everything.
What Happens When Mothers Die is a tribute, an act of witnessing, and a love letter written after loss—when clarity arrives hand in hand with grief.
